Unscented Body Oil: Who It's For and How to Use It

Posted by Cee Cee's Closet NYC on

Unscented body oil is dry body oil with no fragrance added. It gives the same soft, fast-absorbing finish and suits anyone who reacts to fragrance, wears perfume and wants no competing scent, or is buying for someone whose taste they don't know. Apply it on damp skin, over Body Silk if you use one.

What is unscented body oil?

It's a fast-absorbing blend of plant oils with nothing added for scent: no fragrance, no essential oils. Pressed into damp skin after the shower, it seals in that water and sinks in within a minute or two, leaving your body soft with a quiet glow and no greasy film or lingering smell.

Our Unscented Dry Body Oil is built from five ingredients: sweet almond oil, sunflower oil, grapeseed oil, moringa oil and hibiscus. That's the whole list. It's a dry oil, which means it sinks in fast instead of sitting on top of your skin. If you want the full breakdown of how that works, read what dry body oil is and why it isn't greasy.

The full size is $36 for 3.4 oz. Want to try it first? There's a 0.2 fl oz sample for $12. Once it's part of your routine, the 8 fl oz refill is $65 and sold on our website only.

Is unscented the same as fragrance-free?

Not always. On a label, "fragrance-free" means no fragrance was added. "Unscented" can mean a product contains ingredients added to cover up the smell of everything else. The words sound interchangeable, but they can describe two different formulas, so the ingredient list is what tells you which one you have.

The American Academy of Dermatology says dermatologists recommend products labeled "fragrance-free," because a product labeled "unscented" can contain chemicals that neutralize or hide the odors of other ingredients.

Here's where ours lands. The ingredient list on our unscented oil is the five plant ingredients above. There is no fragrance on it and nothing added to cover a smell. Read the label for yourself: four oils and a flower.

Who should use unscented body oil?

Four kinds of people reach for it most: anyone whose skin reacts to fragrance, anyone who wears perfume and wants no competing scent, men who want soft skin without smelling sweet or floral, and anyone buying a gift for someone whose taste they don't know yet. It gives the same finish as our scented oils.

  • Fragrance-sensitive skin. Many people with fragrance-sensitive skin prefer a body oil with no fragrance at all. If that's you, start with the sample and see how your skin does.
  • Perfume wearers. If you already have a signature scent, you don't need your body oil arguing with it.
  • Men. Unscented is one of the easiest picks for him: the soft skin, none of the vanilla.
  • Gifting. When you don't know what someone likes to smell like, you can't get unscented wrong.

One note before you buy: the oil contains sweet almond oil, so anyone with a nut allergy should skip it.

How do you use unscented oil with perfume?

Oil first, perfume last. Apply the oil to damp skin right after your shower, give it one to two minutes to sink in, then spray your perfume on top. Because there's no fragrance in the oil, nothing in it competes with your perfume, so you smell like the scent you chose and nothing else.

If you layer more than one product, keep this order:

  1. Body Silk on damp skin. Two to three pumps of Unscented Body Silk, our 100% fragrance-free body lotion, within three minutes of stepping out of the shower.
  2. Body butter, if you use it. Smooth it on next.
  3. Dry body oil last. Two to three pumps per limb to seal everything in.
  4. Perfume. Once the oil has sunk in, spray as usual.

What else comes unscented?

The whole routine. Body Silk lotion, a sugar scrub and a body butter all come unscented, and the oil is part of two bundles: one built around the full unscented routine and one that pairs it with an African exfoliating net. Everything lives together in the Unscented collection.

Our butters are made to order, so they take a little longer to ship than the rest of the line.
